I really like the Atmega, and Attiny families. They're cheap, easy to program (with ICSP), they can be programmed in pure C, the AVR-GCC toolchain is easy to install on GNU/Linux, …

Some of my projects are built for the Teensy2.0 board from PJRC, a cool tiny board with USB bootloader based around the Atmega32u4.

The others goes from Attiny25 to Atmega328p, mostly in the Attiny family, which is cheaper and provides enough for most little projects.
